TOURIST CAVE

C&H gallery is proud to present TOURIST CAVE by Bonno van Doorn. The exhibition will present new works by the artist.

The works come from constant attempts to make images that escape the generally ap- plicable classification. They are intentional and accidental results that resist the world of obvious logic and efficiency. Bonno combines these results (sculptures and paintings) in installations, becoming a new and temporary order of things. A world in which it is no longer about escaping but about discovering and finding.

Opening: Saturday 19 May, 17:00 - 19:00
Exhibition: 19 May - 14 July 2018
Open: Wed – Sat, 13:00 – 18:00 (and by appointment)

BEYOND THUNDERDOME

Beyond Thunderdome is a post-apocalyptic exhibition set in the remains of monumental architecture. Unfair inhabits the space as a nomadic tribe, adding new meaning to the ruins of yonder. Advertising posters take the place of the painting, scaffolds that of walls and building materials and remains form new occult objects.

Beyond Thunderdome is Part III of Places of Ruin series, hosted by Nest The Hague. The exhibition design is in constant degradation, by the incremental use of different groups of artists. The series is a research on the glorification of impoverishment.

Participating artists: Tim Breukers, Bonno van Doorn, Ricardo van Eyk, Daan Gielis, Jan Hoek, Nasbami, Anika Schwarzlose, Rik Smits, Daniel van Straalen, Thomas Swinkels, Thomas Trum, Joeri Woudstra

THE PAINTED BIRD

In the spring of 2017, Marres will present a spectacular mural about Europe. To create this mural, sixteen national and international artists will paint all galleries and corridors, the stairwell, floors and ceilings of the Marres house. The title is borrowed from Jerzy Kosinski's famous work The Painted Bird, in which a homeless child wanders through the Eastern-European landscape during World War II. Having a surface area of over 750 m2, the painting depicts a series of beautiful and frightening environments: visitors will walk through a high-tech ethnic supermarket to the last surviving piece of primeval forest, from a virtual detention room to a new life festival in the year 2050. The painting encompasses recognizable landscapes, portraits, historic events and fearful dreams.

The painting will be directed by muralist Gijs Frieling. Artist Frank Koolen's contribution to the mural is a comprehensive soundtrack with a personal voice-over, interviews, traffic, chirping birds, music and sound effects. The exhibition will be accompanied by a book with letters from and to the artists and photographs of the paintings, taken by Charlott Markus.

Participating artists: Marie Aly, Cian Yu Bai, Bonno van Doorn, Gijs Frieling, Natasja Kensmil, Klaas Kloosterboer, Mirthe Klück, Frank Koolen, Fiona Lutjenhuis, Jan van de Pavert, Tanja Ritterbex, Sam Samiee, Derk Thijs, Sarah Verbeek, Helen Verhoeven, Evi Vingerling and Job Wouters

LAAT ONS DANSEN

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU SEE

Ornis A. Gallery proudly presents artists Hanae Wilke, Bonno van Doorn and Jóhanna Kristbjörg Sigurðardóttir, to be seen in the group exhibition What you see is what you see, covering paintings, sculptures, installation and film.

What these artists have in common is their desire for setting up a new environment, a vacuum if you will, in which the beholder is strongly encouraged to perceive the artworks from a blank slate perspective. However, we should not regard this as being a purely formalist manifestation, for all three artists are everything but merely interested in the formation and composition of colour and form. The coming about of divergent mental states in relation to the physical presence of their artworks is just as important.

120 MINUTES

120 Minutes is a performative sculpture that will be presented at Art Brussels 2015 in the shape of an exhibition project created by the artists Frank Koolen and Lieven Segers. It features: 2 small exhibition spaces, 36 solo exhibitions, 36 openings, 18 Dutch artists, 18 Belgian artists, 1 Dutch and 1 Flemish curator.

One space, curated by Lieven Segers, only shows works of Belgian artists and the other space will show works of Dutch artists selected by Frank Koolen.

The exhibitions in the two spaces will not run parallel. Every hour of the total length of Art Brussels another solo exhibition opens. If there is an opening and exhibition in one space the exhibition in the other space is deconstructed and a new one is created. Every artist has got 120 minutes to build up, to have an opening and exhibition and to break it back down. The order of the artists is picked by lottery.

THE MIRROR AND LAMP SHOW

This spring 'Suns and Stars Exhibitions' will stay at the historic country house Jagtlust. The house, the garden and the former inhabitants are imbued with the Romantic principles. The ideological values of the present owner, Natuurmonumenten, are also derived from Romanticism. The title of the exhibition refers to M.H. Abrams’ book about Romantic Theory and the Critical Tradition. “Until the Romantic era, the mind was like a mirror, reflecting the real world. For the Romantics it was more like a lamp, the light of the artists inner soul poured out to illuminate the world”. Here lies the origin of the conflict caused by Romantic notions of authenticity and artistic genius.

Participating artists: Tim Breukers, Ruth van Beek, Caro Bensca, José Miguel Biscaya, Bonno van Doorn, Eli Content, Sibylle Eimermacher, Berndnaut Smilde, Rozemarijn Westerink, Paul de Reus, Richtje Reinsma, Pieter Jan Kerstens, Merijn Bolink, Maartje Folkeringa, Lotte Geeven, Ellen Mandemaker, Linda Nieuwstad, Daniëlle van Ark, Annegret Kellner, Sjoerd Tim, Eva Spierenburg, Gijs Frieling, Roosmarijn Schoonewelle, Ralph de Jongh, Hanna Mattes, Ionika Aalders, Charlott Markus, Lisa Couwenbergh, Micho Dimitrov, Martijn Hesseling, Reinier Lagendijk, Sander van Deurzen, Petra Noordkamp, Antoinette Nausikaä and Lucas Lenglet.

HIJACKING KARMA #2.1

ORDER & CHAOS

The artists in Order & Chaos rely upon their intuition and allow images to come into being without any predetermined plan. They display what looks like a moment of chaos in the sharply defined, computer-controlled age we live in. In a large total installation at Garage Rotterdam, together they reflect a new reality: a shadow world that appeals in particular to our sense of whether something is ‘right.’

OBVIOUSLY

1646 is filled with debris and traces of a whirlwind that Bonno van Doorn left behind.

Some materials that occupy the room seem to have ended up here by accident, or appear to have casually come into existence as some sort of by-product. Others look like attempts at an object with a proper identity but that were never quite realised.

A painting has a particular nonchalance, appearing as though it has been made by chance, through testing a pen or a paint colour. Amongst all this are objects staged on a pedestal as proper art objects, yet they lose their familiarity in connection to their surroundings.

In the end everything escapes identification. Each item is a fragment, provisional, pointing elsewhere. Walking around this environment one encounters the constant surprise of a failed recognition.
